What makes a Professional

From business licenses, to insurance, reputation, and experience, find out what to look for.

Modesty & Privacy:

No one should ever miss out on the opportunity of having these moments captured. Both modesty and privacy can be achieved.

intimacy & Personality

Making sure your personalities compliment one another is crucial. Whoever you hire will be sharing the room with your most intimate memories.

It's time to do your homework.

Anyone can buy a camera, take an online class and call themselves a "photographer". And truthfully we all must start somewhere. But this isn't a moment in your life I would take that gamble. There are no do-overs in birth photography. No "getting back in the dress, and cutting the cake again" if you catch my drift. Birth photographers are notorious for having to work in difficult conditions: challenging/low light situations, a moving, fluid environment of nurses and medical professionals, the unpredictability of birth itself is a challenge. At any given moment in the day we have to be prepared for plan B, 3 steps ahead of what is actually happening.

Here are some things to consider/ask/look for when hiring a professional birth photographer:

  • Do they have a business license?
  • Are they insured, or do they have proof of liability insurance?
  • REVIEWS! Check reviews on Google, Facebook, search their full name and see if they're in good standing with the BBB should they have an account.
  • Check their personal page and social media accounts. As a birth photographer we have to live a responsible lifestyle. Drinking/drama/personality are all things to consider. We are on-call just like doctors, you need to know this person will be fresh on the job when you call them at any given time.
  • Word of mouth is a big one, ask around if anyone has heard of positive or negative experiences with that person.
  • Find out how knowledgeable they are about childbirth and labor. Having someone medically informed can make a huge difference in your overall experience.
  • Once you think you've found someone, ask how many births they have been present for.
  • Ask how long they have been in business.
  • Ask your doctor or care provider if they have any experience with that photographer, if they come recommended.
  • Look at their work, is it consistent? Do they have several editing styles, jumping all over the place, or is it a coherent portfolio of work.
  • Again looking at their work, have they grown as a photographer? Are their photos now, better than when they started? Are they taking steps to hone their craft?
  • You should always be entitled to an in person consult before paying a deposit. I can't stress enough how important it is for you to feel comfortable with your photographer, and vice vera, a photographer needs to feel that you are also a good fit for them.

It's your day too.

An invaluable reason to hire a birth photographer is to free daddy up to be present. Present in the moment to support mom, present in the moment to lavish in his first looks, touches, and smells of his new baby. Dad is free to be more hands on, as he supports his wife through labor, as he cuts the cord, as baby grasps his finger for the first time. All the while not being burdened with the responsibility of documenting the day. These memories, mommas, are the ones you often don’t see in the immediate moments after birth. But they are also the memories you want to remember forever, when you became a family, when you fell in love with your husband all over again.

Finding a person you trust to share the most intimate
day of your life with is crucial.

Trust. Confidence. Comfort.

Are you quiet? Reserved? Or are you extroverted and outgoing? Do you plan on laboring in silence, or with a room full of your closet family and friends? Who you hire matters. Your photographer needs to either be stealthy like a ninja, or able to be personable with your family that really likes to hug and tell jokes. A qualified birth photographer should feel like your closest friend, like part of your family. That is how they get you comfortable in front of the camera, that is how they disarm you and get your natural, raw, and genuine reactions. The more you trust and bond with your photographer the better the experience you will have, and I promise you, the better photos you will get.

Cost and Content Concerns:

Some mothers having cesareans often think there won't be anything to really photograph with this type of delivery. The answer is quite the contrary! Cesarean mother's benefit from birth photography just as much, if not more so than mothers laboring, since there are moments in the day they will miss. With a photographer at your side, we're able to fill in many of the blanks in your story that would otherwise be lost. As for cost, even though you are scheduled, birth is unpredictable and babies can come early. Regardless, your photographer is still on call for you, and not taking on any clients around your due date. This results in a loss of income by not taking on other work. Also some women laboring, may only labor for 4 hours, some labor for 24 and still pay a set fee. Factor in editing and how many finished images are delivered the timing always seems to balance out.

Birth photography CAN be captured Modestly. And your privacy preserved.

Universally one of the main concerns among both mothers and fathers is privacy as well as modesty. A professional should be able to insure both of these happen, should that be your request. No family should miss out on these moments for fear of their photos being shared on social media, or concerns of excessive skin exposure. Yes you lose your modesty in the delivery room, but a professional will make sure to capture those vulnerable moments with grace and care. We work hard to make sure you never feel too exposed in the images that are captured or shared. More intimate photos are often captured, but can only be seen by you in your private password protected gallery. Secondly, in regards to privacy. These are YOUR photos. You hired a photographer to capture your day. While yes, they are the intellectual property of the photographer, thanks to contracts set in place agreements can be made in regards to what, if anything is shared publicly. Sometimes it's a simple request, while other photographers may charge a privacy fee since most of our advertising is word of mouth from your friends and family seeing these photos. But it should always be a negotiable part of your contract. Again, you should never miss out on these photos for fear of your privacy. Find someone willing to work with your desires.

Capture the faces from siblings & grandparents, to aunts & uncles!

On a day you welcome your newest bundle, it is also a time to remember the baby that made you a momma, and watch them take on their new role as big brother or sister. And don't miss the emotions your own parents will be feeling as they watch THEIR babies become parents. Everyone's expressions are worth capturing, and having a birth photographer present can make sure these faces are never forgotten.

No matter how you try, you will forget...

You would think, with the hours that you will watch them sleep, or study the lines of their little bodies nestled into yours, or memorize the way their fingers curl around yours.... Something happens along the way, and those details get fuzzy. Birth photographers can capture these precious details and help preserve the clarity of those memories, and of that tininess that seems to vanish so quickly!

Fierce fighters need photos too.

Sometimes you have weeks to process a preterm delivery, other times birth can be unpredictable and life throws you a curveball. Under most circumstances a photographer should be able to make it in to the NICU or special care nursery accompanied by mom or dad at some point in your baby's stay. It might be right after birth, or the visit may have to be postponed until baby is more stable and stronger for visitors. Even though it might not have been the "plan" you envisioned for the birth of your baby, you will cherish having this part of their story told.
